Winter Driving Safety in Michigan

January 22, 2026

Michigan winters are brutal. Here's how to reduce your risk — and what to do if you still end up in a crash.

Slow Down

Posted speed limits assume ideal road conditions. In snow and ice, drop your speed. A lot.

Increase Following Distance

You need three to four times the normal following distance to stop safely on icy roads.

Keep an Emergency Kit

Blankets, water, a flashlight, jumper cables, a shovel, kitty litter or sand for traction, and a first aid kit.

Watch for Black Ice

Bridges, overpasses, and shaded curves freeze first. If the road looks wet but the temperature is freezing, assume it's ice.

If You Still Crash

Stay in your vehicle unless it's unsafe. Turn on hazards. Call 911. Don't stand in active traffic. And once you're safe, call us.
