What to Do After a Car Accident in Michigan

April 2, 2026

The first 72 hours after a car accident set the tone for your entire case. Here's the playbook.

Step 1: Safety First

Check yourself and your passengers. If anyone is hurt, call 911. Move your vehicle out of active traffic if you can do so safely. If you can't, leave it and get yourself somewhere safe.

Step 2: Call the Police

Always call the police. Always. Even for a minor fender bender. You want a police report on the record. That report becomes evidence. Without one, it's your word against theirs.

Step 3: Document Everything

Take photos of both vehicles, the scene, license plates, the other driver's insurance card and ID, and any visible injuries. Video is even better. Get names and phone numbers for every witness on the scene.

Step 4: Get Medical Attention

Even if you feel fine, see a doctor within 24 to 48 hours. Adrenaline masks injury. Whiplash and concussions can take days to manifest. A gap in treatment is one of the first things insurance companies use to deny your claim.

Step 5: Don't Give a Statement

Your own insurance company is required to cooperate with. The other driver's insurance company is not your friend. Don't give them a recorded statement until you've talked to a lawyer.

Step 6: Call Big League

Before you sign anything. Before you accept anything. Before the adjusters get to you. A free consultation costs you nothing and can be the difference between a quick lowball and real compensation.
