In Michigan, the answer is complicated — but usually, your own PIP coverage pays first.
Your Michigan no-fault Personal Injury Protection benefits pay your reasonable and necessary medical bills up to the coverage limit you selected. This is true regardless of who caused the crash.
There's a priority order: you look to your spouse's policy, any resident relative's policy, the owner of the vehicle you were in, and if nothing else works, the Michigan Assigned Claims Plan.
If your PIP coverage is exhausted or you chose a reduced PIP level, your health insurance steps in. Your health insurer may also have a lien on your settlement.
Medical providers, health insurers, Medicare, and Medicaid can all have liens that must be resolved from any settlement. We handle those negotiations so you keep more of your recovery.
